Dopo un solo anno di pontificato Papa Francesco venne in Calabria, il Pontefice argentino aveva già conquistato tutti. Con quel “fratelli e sorelle buonasera” esclamato con estrema semplicità dalla loggia centrale della Basilica Vaticana, per il primo saluto ai fedeli, era già entrato nel cuore della gente. I calabresi e i tanti fedeli provenienti da tutto il sud il 21 giugno 2014 si svegliarono all’alba per attenderlo a Castrovillari prima e a Cassano poi.
Alle 9 l’elicottero atterrò nel piazzale del carcere di Castrovillari, Papa Francesco incontrò i detenuti soffermandosi in particolare con i malati, e gli agenti penitenziari. In quelle celle era recluso il padre di Cocò, il bimbo ucciso e bruciato insieme al nonno e alla sua compagna. Il Pontefice lanciò il suo messaggio di speranza augurandosi che nessun altro bambino avesse lo stesso destino, poi si incamminò tra la folla accarezzando e baciando i bimbi più piccoli.
Emozioni fortissime per le migliaia di fedeli in trepidante attesa anche a Cassano, dove Francesco atterrò allo stadio in un clima di grande festa. Scese dall’elicottero dispensò saluti a chi lo accoglieva e abbracciò forte la piccola Francesca Maria affetta da una grave patologia che gli disse “ti voglio bene”. Fu un viaggio di fede e di speranza che i calabresi non hanno mai dimenticato così come non lo abbiamo dimenticato noi che abbiamo avuto la fortuna di chiedere e ricevere la sua benedizione.

The Pope in Calabria: The Emotions of the Faithful
After just one year of his pontificate, Pope Francis came to Calabria—the Argentine Pontiff had already conquered everyone. With that simple “Brothers and sisters, good evening,” spoken from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in his first greeting to the faithful, he had already entered people’s hearts.
On June 21, 2014, Calabrians and many believers from all over southern Italy woke at dawn to await him – first in Castrovillari, then in Cassano.
At 9 a.m., the helicopter landed in the courtyard of the Castrovillari prison. Pope Francis met with the inmates, pausing especially with the sick and with prison officers. In those cells was imprisoned the father of little Cocò, the child who was murdered and burned along with his grandfather and the grandfather’s partner. The Pope delivered a message of hope, expressing his wish that no other child would ever suffer the same fate. He then walked among the crowd, gently touching and kissing the youngest children.
It was an incredibly emotional moment for the thousands of faithful anxiously waiting in Cassano as well, where Francis landed in the stadium amid a joyful atmosphere. As he stepped off the helicopter, he greeted those who welcomed him and gave a heartfelt hug to little Francesca Maria, a girl suffering from a serious illness, who told him, “I love you.” The Pope then visited another place of suffering, the Hospice…
